Well, reality broke again. Hate it when that happens! Fortnite just held its traditional live event, which was a little more interactive than usual. Today, we were called upon the Helicarrier to defeat Galactus with the help of the Marvel superheroes, and I’m fairly sure it worked. We flew the battle bus at his tremendous, terrible visage and then sort of exploded him from the inside, putting the game offline until the beginning of Season 5. It’s not such a mystery as the last time Fortnite did that, with last year’s epic Black Hole, because we’ve got a countdown and we know things are going to start tomorrow. Here’s what we know.
First off, the basics: Fortnite Season 5, according to the official Fortnite status twitter account, will begin at 4:00 AM Eastern on December 2. True server downtime will begin at 12:00 AM Eastern.
In the meantime, the official Fortnite twitter has begun the process of teasing the next season. So far, things relate back to the interdimensional plotline that began at the end of last chapter, with suit and tie Jonesy doing…something. He showed up during the event, at least.
We’re going to get more of these as the night goes on, but so far the logs seem to be describing characters from the upcoming season.
Beyond that, it’s hard to know. This recent Marvel season was pretty expansive, even by the standards of Chapter 2, and so the real question will be whether Epic will double down and give us something on that scale again or revert to the sort of “normal” sized season when there isn’t a massive license hanging out in there.
Some previous seasons have been teased a little more aggressively, but we’re going into this one quite a bit more blind. Which is fun: for a little while, Fortnite fell into a fairly predictable rhythm that became most established towards the end of Chapter 1, but as this recent live event into downtime thing shows, Epic is shaking things up just enough to make sure there can be some surprises in there. I’m sure there will be more in the morning, so check back then.
