Fortnite Chapter 2, Season 3 kicked off yesterday and it’s pretty great. The map has flooded, leaving much of it underwater. And new locations like the Fortilla have emerged like something straight out of Water World (aka Mad Max At Sea).
At the Fortilla, as well as most other watery locations, you can now encounter Loot Sharks. These giant beasts are super aggressive and will follow you and even leap from the water onto the land, massive gaping maws lined with deadly teeth coming right for you.
You can fight or avoid these Loot Sharks or you can use a fishing pole to snag one and ride behind it as though you were water-skiing. It’s fun, if a bit risky.
The second new PvE enemy type are the new Marauders. These bands of AI enemies can appear anywhere with no other goal than to take you out.
My first encounter with Marauders was at Misty Meadows. They showed up moments after I landed and before I’d even found a single gun. I managed to evade them and loot up a bit, but they kept tracking me and I was injured pretty badly taking them down—leaving me vulnerable when another player showed up a second later.
This new threat is similar to AI henchmen you’d encounter last season, or Stormtroopers from the Star Wars event. The difference is that with both those groups you’d go to them on your own terms. With Marauders, they show up on their own terms and can definitely mess with your game, especially if you’re flying solo.
These, and many other changes, should spice things up for the Fortnite community, at least for now. I’m really enjoying the map changes, also. Whirlpools blast you up into the air, giving you the ability to cover large swaths of ground in no time at all. I actually chased another player this way. They were in a boat and I followed them from the sky before eventually landing in the water next to them and getting the elimination. (I was promptly eliminated myself by another player on the shore, but it was still fun).
