One of Fortnite’s biggest shortcomings is its ranked system. YouTuber Muselk thinks a reworking of this system could greatly improve the game.
It’s no secret that Fortnite’s Arena Mode ranking system is lacking. It’s, arguably, one of the worst ranking systems in recent memory – with no incentive to grind the ranks.
The only reasons you have for getting to Champion League is to participate in tournaments and brag about it to your friends. There’s no reward for making it to Champion League when the season ends.
In fact, Champion League isn’t even the most difficult rank in which to compete – as it’s supposed to be. People on the fringe of Champion League are trying much harder than those who have already made it. There’s no incentive to try your hardest once you hit the 6,000 Hype threshold.
The most effective way to grind Hype points isn’t even through playing Arena. Once you hit a certain amount of Hype, it becomes far more efficient to grind Hype Nite tournaments rather than bang your head against the Bus Fare wall.
The current system provides little reward for making it to Champion League and no punishment for poor performance once you’re there. There’s no de-ranking, which means a player could theoretically have 0 Hype and still be in Champion League.
Fortnite YouTuber Elliott ‘Muselk’ Watkins called for a fix to competitive Fortnite. He thinks this will help all Fortnite modes, including casual playlists.
The idea is a simple one: if Epic releases a competitive, rewarding ranked mode then more people will play it. These players won’t be trying as hard in the casual playlists, making the game more fun for everyone.
It’s not as if there’s no blueprint for a rewarding ranked mode in a battle royale. Apex Legends Ranked Mode isn’t perfect, but it’s far more rewarding than what Fortnite has implemented.
There’s a ton of room for improvement. Epic could rework the point system, space out the divisions, allow players to de-rank, and offer cosmetic rewards for those who make it to the top level.
Arena Mode has been an issue in Fortnite for a long time. Epic may be reluctant to change it because of their open tournaments. Hopefully, they take a look at Arena in Chapter 2 Season 3. A ranked improvement is long overdue.
