Joseph ‘Gosu’ Deen Becomes World’s Youngest Pro Fortnite Gamer

An eight-year-old boy has been snapped up as a professional gamer and picked up a $33,000 (£23,600) bonus for his troubles.

Joseph Deen, who games under the name ‘Gosu’, became the youngest professional Fortnite player in the world when he signed up with Team 33 back in December.

The schoolboy was given a $33,000 bonus for signing up and a high-end gaming PC – not bad, eh.

Why couldn’t someone have signed me up as a professional Mario Karts player when I was eight?

“While many other teams didn’t take me seriously due to my young age, Team 33 scouted me through Fornite games and let me train and learn with them daily.

“I couldn’t be happier today to become an official member of the team.”

Deen, who lives in California where Team 33 is also based, has been playing Fortnite since he was just four years old and first came onto esport scouts radars around a year-and-a-half ago.

Team 33 chief executive and co-founder Tyler Gallagher told the BBC: “One of my scouts got in touch and said, ‘I’ve got to know this kid called Joseph and he is insanely good’.

“So they started playing one v one matches as much as they could every day. After a while my scout said ‘you’ve got to sign this kid. If we don’t, someone else will!’.”

Although it might sounds like Deen is a little young to be a professional gamer, figures from esportearnings.com reveal that only two of the top 10 highest earning Fornite players are over 18.

Does that make anyone else feel very, very old?

And Deen has his eyes on becoming the next Kyle Giersdorf, who, at just 16, scooped the $3 million (£2.3m) top prize at the Fortnite World Cup in 2019.

Giersdorf, who uses the name Bugha, signed with esports outfit Sentinels in March 2019 and now has more than a million Twitch followers.

Talking about his inspiration, Deen added: “My dream is to be like Bugha and play like him.

“I look up to him because no-one took him seriously until he won the World Cup and I feel the same, as no-one took me seriously until I was signed by Team 33.”
