Fortnite’s Latest Major Cinematic Was Directed By The Russo Brothers

The Russo Brothers recently directed the Fortnite Chapter 2: Season 6 “Primal” trailer, as well as lending their talents to the game’s future content.

Epic Games scored a major directing force for their Fortnite Chapter 2: Season 6 Cinematic trailer: the Russo Brothers of Marvel Cinematic Universe fame. Yesterday’s big “Primal” video turned many heads for showing a massive crossover battle that featured everyone from God Of War’s Kratos to the Xenomorphs from Alien – and this should be no surprise given the creative minds behind it.

Having gotten their start directing smaller projects like the 2006 Owen Wilson vehicle You, Me and Dupree and the pilot episode of Arrested Development, the sibling team of Anthony and Joseph Russo finally hit it big with 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This led to further success for the Brothers in the MCU, as they would go on to direct its 2016 follow-up, Captain America: Civil War, and both 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame – all of which were praised for juggling multiple heroes from Marvel’s various sub-franchisees while telling compelling stories on their own. Most recently, the duo helmed last month’s Cherry (which featured yet another Marvel star in the form of Spider-Man: Far From Home’s Tom Holland as a troubled Army veteran), but that hasn’t stopped them from showing off their talent for large-scaled crossovers in Fortnite’s latest cinematic trailer.

In a statement made to Variety earlier today, Anthony and Joseph Russo thanked Epic chief creative officer Donald Mustard for allowing them to work on the visually impressive Fortnite Chapter 2: Season 6 “Primal” trailer, as the directors are big fans of the game. In turn, Mustard explained that “Primal” is Fortnite’s most story-driven event” to date, and as such Epic wanted a pair of directors who could tell it in “a really authentic and character-driven way.” Mustard felt the Russos were just the people for the job, and Epic soon hired them to write, storyboard, and direct not only the “Primal” cinematic trailer but much of Fortnite Chapter 2: Season 6’s yet-to-be-revealed story material. In the meantime, gaming journalist Imran Khan made light of this development on Twitter, humorously pointing out that the Russos decided to have Street Fighter‘s Ryu murder the banana mascot Peely with a Hadouken – just one of the crazy moments featured in the Fortnite Chapter 2: Season 6 trailer.

The large-scale crossover feel of Fortnite’s “Primal” trailer is quite fitting, as the popular multiplayer battle royale has had an insane amount of guest characters join its ranks over the past couple of years – with the latest one being the recently-leaked Ant-Man. In fact, several of Marvel’s most famous heroes were brought into Fortnite last season, though sadly none of them appeared in the Russo Brothers-directed “Primal” trailer.

However, the sibling duo behind some of the biggest crossover events in cinematic history was a natural fit for Fortnite’s new event, given how much yesterday’s “Primal” trailer matches the spectacle of Avengers: Endgame’s climactic final battle. In addition to that big moment, the Russo Brothers can now rightly say that they were able to show Terminator’s Sara Conner gunning down Xenomorphs and the rugged feline Meowscles trying (and failing) to knock out the Predator thanks to Fortnite’s latest event.
