Fortnite has launched its brand new flooded map today, and we have gotten an introduction to both it and the new battle pass skins in one cinematic trailer that plays when you log into the game.
You can check it out below if you were not like me and did not get up at 5 AM to watch it in the game itself.
It showcases that yes, this will be a heavy water-based season, as right now probably 60% of the map is covered by water in the wake of Midas’ disastrous anti-storm device experiment. Midas is indeed in the trailer, possibly getting eaten by a shark, but the main star is everyone’s favorite buff cat, Meowscles, who has surfing around introducing us to more or less all the new battle pass skins, the most notable of which is probably Jules, aka the “girl in the picture on Midas’ desk,” and we can see that she’s some kind of engineer. My guess is that she built the Device, so she is as much to blame about what happened as Midas.
The main zone featured in the trailer is the new “Flotilla,” which was assembled out of the wreckage of other zones. I am guessing we will see a few familiar objects when we go explore it for ourselves. Also making a significant cameo is Aquaman, who is this season’s secret battle pass skin, except “secret” doesn’t really seem like the right word. You just have to do a bunch of challenges to unlock him like we did with Deadpool before him. And yes, it’s the cool Jason Momoa version not the lame blond version from the comics. While he’s wearing a shirt in this trailer, there is a skin variant where he’s not. Eyes emoji.
It’s a cool little introduction, as these things usually are, introducing us to the new world and mechanics. Fortnite is always pretty light on actual story outside of these big environmental changes and skin interactions, but maybe someday we’ll figure out where all this is going.
I will expect the water to start to recede as the season goes on, and by the end, we might have a very different map than what we’re seeing in this preview trailer here. More to come, but for now, get out there an explore.
