Yesterday evening, Apex Legends launched on the Nintendo Switch.
This brings one of the best modern first-person shooters to Switch for the very first time.
Alongside the Nintendo Switch launch, Respawn has kicked off the Chaos Theory Collection Event, replete with new challenges and rewards and a big map change in the Caustic Town Takeover.
Where the Water Treatment used to be is now this:
The event lasts until March 23rd and is free for everyone on all platforms.
Ring Fury Mode
Ring Fury Escalation Takeover is a new game mode for the Chaos Theory event:
“Ring Fury is a new Apex playlist takeover that follows regular BR rules, but each round, one or more Ring Flares will appear on the map within the current ring. Ring Flares are slowly expanding pockets of the Ring within the Arena! Maggie sure does know how to start a party.
“Those who get caught in a Ring Flare will take damage equal to the damage dealt by the current round’s Ring. You’ll be given a short warning on the map and minimap before the Ring Flare appears. Legends will call out if they are in direct danger or if there’s one opening up nearby.”
A new Heat Shield item can help you prevent getting destroyed by a Ring Flare:
“During the Ring Fury Escalation Takeover, all players will start with a Heat Shield in their inventory on drop. Throw down your Heat Shield to avoid damage from Ring Flares (or from the ring itself!) and remember that you can always find more. The loot pool for this event has been tuned to spread Heat Shields out throughout the map.”
Fortunately this Heat Shield doesn’t take up any inventory space. A new Survival Slot has been added to the game. I expect future items will be added that will make use of this spot, which is a great idea overall and should be quickly copied by Warzone and Fortnite.
This mode will take the place of normal Duos and Trios, but since it’s an “escalation” event, Respawn will tweak the rate of Ring Flares every few days, with five different stages of escalation until the event ends.
Respawn has also added no-fill matchmaking for players who’d prefer to play Solo in Duos or Trios modes. I’d prefer to just have a Solo mode but this is a nice option if you don’t feel like playing with randoms and have no friends available.
Only six players per match can enter with no-fill toggled to keep balancing in check, and it won’t be available in ranked play. Respawn is still pushing team play as the best way to imbibe Apex Legends, but they give some good reasons why some players might want to go it alone:
- Focus on completing certain Daily and Weekly challenges
- Warm up, drop hot, and get into lots of fights
- Challenge yourself—can you win a round of Duos alone? How about Trios?
- Experience the latest lore teaser on your own
- Explore the map and experiment with characters you haven’t tried before; Take an opportunity to learn a bit more about the game at your own pace.
Challenges and Rewards
The Chaos Theory event also includes challenges and rewards. You can earn 1000 points per day and these will unlock 24 different rewards on the Chaos Theory reward track. These include weapon and Legend skins and more.
All told, this should be a pretty fun new event for Apex Legends players, and especially for newcomers on the Nintendo Switch. Good luck out there!
